Collaging Google Drawing
Today in ruma tahi we have been learning to make a collage using Google Drawing. We used the explore, mask and arrange tools to put our collage together. We had to create a NZ bird and put it into its natural habitat. I thought it was a lot of fun and I am really pleased with my Red-Crowned Parakeet. Have you ever had a go at making a collage using Google Drawing?

My Kowhaiwhai Art Work
Kowhaiwhai Art
In He Kakano we have been learning about kowhaiwhai patterns and their meanings. This term we had to create our own kowhaiwhai patterns and describe their meanings. I decided to make my art about friendship and I used a butterfly to symbolize it because I think butterflies are friendly. The black designs in the corners symbolize a group of friends and the purple designs symbolize a bridge to friendship. I chose purple, black and white for the colours because I think the colours mix well.

What Will Happen If Bees Go Extinct?
WALT
We are learning to write an information report.
Success Criteria:
We will plan and then write an information report on a topic of our choice related to bees.
Our report will:
- Be interesting!
- Give information about a topic of our choice related to bees.
- Show a clear link to our planning.
- Start with an opening statement about our topic.
- Have at least 3 paragraphs. Each paragraph will have an opening statement and
- a series of facts related to that statement
- Include some complex or compound sentence structures.
- Include at least one diagram, photograph, illustration or map to go with the text.
- Finish with a general statement about the topic.
- Use information from at least 3 different sources. This information will be
- written in our own words and we will write down our sources at the end of our report.
What Will Happen If Bees Go Extinct?
Have you wondered what would happen if there were no more bees in the world?
If there were no more bees, supermarkets would have 50% less vegetables in
supermarkets because bees pollinate 90% of the fruit and vegetables in the world.
The fruit and vegetables in supermarkets would be more expensive. We could lose
fruits and vegetables such as carrots, apples, lemons, onions etc. Flower meadows
could die out because they aren’t being pollinated by bees. The Varroa Mite are killing
the larvae by drinking their blood and they are drinking the bees blood. It would be
hard to get rid of them because they live on the bees.

More Expensive And More Work
Farmers would have more work because they would have to pollinate their
orchards/farms by hand and pollinating by hand could take days unless you
had some help. When pollinating by hand you sometimes have to buy special
gadgets to make sure it is done right. These gadgets could be very expensive
especially because there would be no more bees to pollinate their orchards/farms.
In China the farmers there are having to pollinate by hand and they have to spend a
lot of money on gadgets. This could mean that supermarkets would make the prices
of food higher than usual.

The Animal Food Chain
The animal food chain would change because animals that eat mice and
weasels could die out because they wouldn’t be able to eat mice or weasels.
The bears won’t be able to eat the honey out of the beehives. Badgers and skunks
wouldn’t be able to eat the grubs from inside the beehives. Animals such as foxes,
weasels and field mice won’t be able to eat the grubs and honey as well. They would
have to find other food that isn’t grubs or honey.

We Could Lose Animals
Some animals like rabbits, deer, pigs, cows and horses could die out because
they are all vegetarian animals and they would only have grass to eat instead of
carrots, tomatoes, lettuce etc. This would mean that we would not be able to eat
ham, pork, beef and venison. This could mean that horse riders and deer hunters
would not be horse riding or deer hunting because there would be no horses to
ride and no deer to hunt. This is what could happen if bees go extinct and this is also
how important they are to our world.

Callaghans Ridge Tramp
Thursday 11th of April 2019 room 1, room 8, Parents, Ms Kemp and Mrs Truman went on a
tramp on the Callaghan's Ridge track. Before we left Ms Kemp had to check that we had the
right gear. I held a tarpaulin and someone else in my group held some rope for when we made
our bivvys. Then we went into our car groups and headed off.

We drove through Kumara to get to Callaghans and once we got there we made sure everyone
was there. Me and my friends walked at a slow pace so that we wouldn’t get too tired or slip
over tree roots. We saw lots of blue mushrooms and at one point we spotted a Kea!

Once we got to a nice clear spot we made wind and rain proof bivvys. In my team there is
Sam, Callan, Xavier and Grace. When we finished making our bivvys we ate our lunch and
Ms Kemp gave each team some jelly frogs as a reward. We started walking once everyone
had eaten lunch and taken down their bivvys.

I enjoyed seeing blue mushrooms and all the different birds like the Kea and Weka.
I think my team worked well together especially when we had to make our bivvys. We
took turns cutting the rope and holding the tarpaulin.

Lightning Never Strikes Twice
Room one was learning how to add more language features into our writing. We also had to describe how we would feel if lightning struck twice.
I was frightened as I crouched between a pile of dusty sacks. Inside the windmill it was dusty and even a stale stench. The wind was howling like a wolf on a full moon. The streaks of lightning hit the itching bolts of the sail. I screamed but it only got louder. The wind wasn’t howling like before. My foot crept away touching a magic light. Heat waves rushed through my body as I was zapped. Light cloud of smoke crept past the tip of my nose and made me sneeze. My eyes felt like they went out of my skull. The wind stole the door as if it were a thief.

William Pike Beach Cookout
Today room 1, room 8, teachers, teacher aids and parents went down to the Karoro beach
near Watson's creek and the Tasman sea. The people in my team were Sam, Xavier, Callan,
Grace and I. Also the parent supervisor for my team was Matt Levein.

Grace and I. Also the parent supervisor for my team was Matt Levein.
We went on the 3rd of April in the morning in Autumn during the open fire season.
My team made a tee pee campfire and surrounded it with rocks. First we dug a hole in the
ground. After digging a hole everyone got pieces of wood and put them into a pile. We then
started to build the tee pee out of the sticks. We searched for big rocks to surround it and
then lit it with the match after. Lastly Matt put a grill on top of the rocks so we could cook
our food.

All of my team took some food or Cutlery to school for the beach cookout. We made steak
with potatoes and garlic butter for our main course. For our desert we cooked bananas and
put chocolate sauce and mini marshmallows inside. We also cooked our food on a grill when
there were hot embers and small flames left. We wrapped the potatoes in tin foil and cooked
them in the fire and on the grill. As we cooked the bananas we left them inside of their skin
so they wouldn’t get dirty from the grill.

We went to the beach cookout for the William Pike challenge and we had lots of fun cooking,
eating and making campfires. Our classes also went to learn new skills as a team. The skills
my team learnt were how to build a campfire and how to cook really good food.

I personally thought that the beach cookout was a good experience and I would do it again but
next time I would bring bread and a rubbish bag. Next time I’d wear more enclosed shoes as
well. I really enjoyed making the tee pee campfire because I haven’t made one before.
I enjoyed the banana split because it had lots of chocolate sauce and mini marshmallows it
was yummy.

My Fraction Poster
Room 1 was learning about fraction. Once we had finished learning about fractions we made poster about what we had learnt. I made a poster that says, I learnt that 1 3rd is larger than 1 5th because on the fraction chart it shows that 1 3rd over laps 1 5th. So there for the larger the bottom number the smaller it is.

My Descriptive Writing
My cat was at his darkest when he started lurking around in the precious grass.
His eyes greener than ever. His ears looking sharp as they pointed upwards.
His fur looking soft and smooth. The position he was in looked as if he was ready to
pounce right at me. He was a sloth with his slow moments. Everytime he meowed it sounded
loud like a lion's roar. MEOW! He was a dark lord who looked like they needed more sleep.
His teeth looked sharper than ever now. His eyes focused on almost everything. His head
turning side to side. MEOW! As he moved his head it went Click. He was greedy cat wanting
to eat anything he wanted. Gurgle Gurgle! His stomach grumbled as his eyes went sharp.

Tohunga Reading Reflection
Tohunga Reading Reflection
From reading and learning about Tohungas I now know that Tohungas were
illegal and rongoā the natural herb/plant they used was illegal as well. I also
learnt that Tohungas are like māori doctors but they use natural ingredients,
herbs and chants. Tohungas used rongoā and it is a plant that the Tohunga
used to heal many illnesses. Tohungas and rongoā used to be illegal but
aren’t anymore.

In this story there was a boy called Rāmahi who was quite sick so Mā his
mother took him to a Tohunga because all the other doctors didn’t help him
at all. In the end he didn’t get better straight away but he did start talking and
walking around when they got back.

Dear, Mum and Dad
I don’t want to go to school because people say my face looks like a puffer fish

A Moment In Time Writing Work
In Ruma Tahi we wrote about a moment in time. I found it quite easy because I wrote about a moment in time last year.
A Moment In Time
I was in the rough waves with my sister. I felt like I was being tackled
except it didn’t hurt that much. Every time a big wave came I jumped like I
was a high jumper so I didn’t get smashed. Every time a wave made go up it
felt like a water slide but not as long. I could feel the little bumps in the waves
every time they passed me. The salty water went into my mouth a few times
and when it did my mouth went dry.
