WPC Bike Ride

On Tuesday September 22 my class and I went on a bike ride for a William Pike Challenge. It was about 33km long and we biked from Milltown to Kapitea Reservoir.  We started at about 9:30 and by the time we finished it was about 2:30. We had to be at school by 8:10 and left school at 8:30. Since I didn't have a bike Ms Hanley let me borrow her mountain bike for the day. I went with Indi, Emma, Poppy, Lily, Nevey, Tyler, Phoebe, Summer,  Billie and Tim in Scott’s van. Before we left Ms Kemp made sure everyone one was equipped with the right gear.

We drove over the Taramakau Bridge, to Hokitika, past Lake Kaniere and through to Milltown. When we got to Milltown the weather conditions were rainy but it wasn’t too bad. We then waited for all of the bikes to get unloaded and over the gate. Once we started on the wilderness trail I got quite tired because most of it was uphill and there were only small downhill parts. I had to pedal a lot on the uphills otherwise I had to walk.

Our first stop was Cowboy’s Paradise and it was a while away. As I was about to get to Cowboy’s Paradise everyone was yelling at me and saying ‘DON’T SKID’. I was so confused and my classmates told me that a man came out and told them not to skid on the road, while starting to say bad words to them. I was a bit worried and once Ms Kemp got there she said that we should go to the other side of the road quietly. Once we were on the other side a small group and I were at the front and we started biking again.

We stopped at a road and a truck went along the road. After we crossed two fords (concrete dip with water running through it) and even when I stood up the water shot up and wet my bottom. Our next stop was meant to be a place with tents and toilets but the adults didn’t wait for everyone so then they stopped at Kawhoka Intake. Once we got to Kawhoka Intake we had lunch and when Ms Kemp got there she gave some people a telling off.

After we ate lunch we zoomed off again to get to Kapitea Reservoir. One part that I thought was boring on the way was a big long road that was straight with a bit of turns. When we got to the end of the boring road we biked up the main road and I just walked up the road. Once we got to the top of the road we started on the wilderness trail again. It was downhill, uphill, straight and turny. I didn’t like it at all and I was in the middle so there were people way in front of me and people way behind me. I got worried and thought I went the wrong way but as I got near the end I saw people. I was tired and I felt like I wanted to just walk. When we got back to school I was happy because I got to go home.

I learnt when I needed a gear change and I also learnt that biking the wilderness trail took a lot of effort.

My favourite part was when the tandem was behind me and Hamish started beeping the horn. I also liked how Ms Kemp said that when showing leadership you don’t have to be first to finish and I thought it was a challenge.

What Now At Shantytown

 What Now

At school Ms Kemp surprised us with a What Now event and because of COVID only one hundred people were allowed to be there. Only the What Now crew, Room 8, Room 7, Karoro School teachers and others were allowed in Shantytown. It was on Sunday 13th September 2020 and we had to be there at 7am in the morning. The filming started at 8am and it finished at 10am. I went there with Billie, Billie, Summer and Emma.

When we got there we had to wait at the train station for a while to give Ms Kemp our forms and then we put our bags in the church. After we went back to the train station we talked to Erin (presenter), Matt (camera man), Matt (prop maker) and Morgan (director). Once we got on the train we did a practice run and after we did a part of the live video.

The next event we did was Say It Don’t Spray It . It was held outside the fire station and Emma, Jordan, Mea, Lucy and Zade were on it. The thing they had to say was ‘Sheila seldom sells shelled shrimps in Shantytown’. When they didn’t say it right they got sprayed with foam.

We went gold panning in the gold panning area and we pretended to watch a movie in the movie theatre too. All of us did target the teacher which was outside of the Shantytown school yard. Ms Newton had to sit in the chair and answer questions. When she got a question right we got sprayed with foam and when she got it wrong we had to throw a ball at a target. When it was the last part of filming Erin got the foam gun and made it snow foam outside of the post office.

My favourite part was when Mrs Newton got a big bucket of gunge tipped on her and when we all got sprayed with foam at the end. I wish that there were more things to do because only a few people got to participate in Say It Don’t Spray It and throwing a ball at the target. I had lots of fun and I thought it was cool how Erin would change her outfit each time.

Junior Journal For SSR

For ssr I had to read three non fiction articles from a school journal. I read some articles from a school journal called The Desert Kaupoi by Ariana Tikao. My favourite part was about the second world war. It said that the second world war started in 1939 when Germany invaded Poland. It also said that the war ended in May 1945 and that it lasted for 6 years.

Wild Things

WPC Lake Daniell

On Wednesday 9/9/20 Room 8 and some parents went on a tramp along the Lake Daniell trail to Kohanga Atawhai-Manson Nicolls hut for a William Pike challenge. The gear we had to bring were a rain jacket, beanie or hat, thermals, walking shoes/tramping boots, medication, day pack, food and water. Before we went tramping we did some preparation work around hypothermia, information about Lake Daniell and mountain safety rules like leave no trace and bring the right gear. We also learnt about the beech forest and how you can get lost if you don’t stay on the track.

There were 28 students, 11 adults and 9 of them were parents. I traveled with Summer, Phoebe, and Rachel. We went through Lewis Pass near the Southern Alps and when we got to Reefton we stopped at the restrooms. Outside we played on the bike track and skate park. My classmates and I played bull rush on the grass area as well. We went through the spring junction and I thought it looked pretty. As we got to the carpark at Lake Daniell all of the students got numbers and my number was 21.

I walked near the front of the group most of the time and there weren’t many big up hills. At first we stopped to check in every 20 minutes and after a while we stopped every 30 minutes until we got to the hut. We had to see if we could find trees that the long tailed bats would be in as well. On the way to the hut some people went down to the water and one person went fishing.

When we got to the Manson Nicolls hut we had another eating break, a rest and a walk around. Before we went inside we had to take our shoes off. Inside there was a big chalkboard and on the chalkboard there were people's names and drawings of birds like Tui’s. There were fire pits, picnic tables, seats made of logs and sinks outside. Before we walked back we had to sign a book to show who had visited the hut.

On the way back other people and I had to walk at the back because we got in trouble. On our last stop Ms Kemp forgave us and let a small group of us walk at the front and the parent who was with us was Aaron. We walked at a fast pace and got to the car park quickly. Nathan and Charlie found a rope swing near a picnic table and Charlie F’s dad let us have a turn on it. Once everyone was back we all said our numbers and left.

My favourite part was going on the rope swing and trying to travel around the tree. I also liked playing corners in the car with Phoebe and Summer. I learnt that Lake Daniell has a big drop so it goes really deep and I also learnt that it was originally called Lake Daniells with an s.

Magazine For SSR

Magazine - read at least three articles from within a magazine. Write a paragraph about your thoughts about your favourite part.

I read three KCC articles from a magazine called Wild Things for ssr. The one that I read was about the wildlife and scraps. My favourite part was when it talked about how biodegradable scraps can take up to months or years to break down. I also liked how it said that scraps can attract pests like stoats, mice and rats.
